Uncovering Hidden Histories: The Surprising Genealogy Journey of Thane Scott

Genealogy is an exciting journey that often surprises us with stories buried in time. Just last March, my cousins Mark McKinnon and Tom Hodgson joined me to share our genealogy journeys during a speech at Historic Athens. We never imagined that our presentation would spark a remarkable conversation with Thane Scott, a Vermont attorney with his own profound story of discovery.

The Meeting

After our presentation, we had the pleasure of speaking with Thane. About two years ago, he was contacted by historians from the University of Georgia who wanted to learn more about prominent men who fathered children with enslaved women. This inquiry led Thane to a revelation about his family history that changed everything he thought he knew about himself.

A Grandmother's Legacy

Thane has always held his grandmother close to his heart. He affectionately described her as his "North Star." Growing up, she would drive several hours from Toronto, Canada, to Vermont every summer to pick him up, making him feel treasured as the youngest child in the family. His grandmother was a retired librarian and a University of Chicago alumna, who shared captivating stories filled with her experiences in Canada. The only mention of Georgia during their trips would come up when dealing with border patrol.

A Surprising Discovery

Two years ago, Thane uncovered a shocking truth: his grandmother was a descendant of Alonzo Church, a prominent Presbyterian pastor and former President of the University of Georgia. But the real surprise was yet to come. Thane learned that his grandmother was of Black heritage and had been "passing" as white throughout her life. This discovery opened a new chapter in Thane's understanding of his ancestry, revealing that he, too, shares these roots. This revelation was not just about origin; it signaled a 70% increase in the complexity of Thane's identity.

Further exploration unveiled that Thane is also a descendant of Madison Davis. Madison was one of the first Black members in the Georgia Legislature, showcasing the resilience and achievements of Black Americans. This link to Black excellence adds depth to Thane's story, reminding us that American history is filled with both struggles and successes. This perspective shifts the narrative from a singular view of identity to one that celebrates a spectrum of experiences.

The Intersection of Histories

The irony of Thane's story is striking. E.R. Hodgson, a white ancestor of mine, owned Madison Davis, who was enslaved but later freed by my great-great grandfather. These interconnected histories reveal the complicated narrative of American genealogy. They remind us that our past is often tangled with unexpected truths, and exploring these connections can foster deeper empathy.

The Importance of Genealogy

Genealogy transcends merely tracing family trees; it helps us uncover the personal stories that define who we are. Thane’s journey emphasizes the significance of understanding our roots. For many, genealogy offers a unique way to connect with our past and honor the lives of our ancestors. It allows us to recognize shared humanity and appreciate the struggles they faced.

The Role of Historians

Historians are crucial in revealing these hidden narratives. Their work sheds light on the complexities of American history, especially regarding slavery. By researching figures like Alonzo Church and Madison Davis, historians enrich our understanding of who has shaped our history, including those who were often marginalized. Their research helps to create a more inclusive picture of our past and highlights diverse contributions.
