Genealogy is an exciting journey that often surprises us with stories buried in time. Just last March, my cousins Mark McKinnon and Tom Hodgson joined me to share our genealogy journeys during a speech at Historic Athens. We never imagined that our presentation would spark a remarkable conversation with Thane Scott, a Vermont attorney with his own profound story of discovery.
The Meeting
After our presentation, we had the pleasure of speaking with Thane. About two years ago, he was contacted by historians from the University of Georgia who wanted to learn more about prominent men who fathered children with enslaved women. This inquiry led Thane to a revelation about his family history that changed everything he thought he knew about himself.
A Grandmother's Legacy
Thane has always held his grandmother close to his heart. He affectionately described her as his "North Star." Growing up, she would drive several hours from Toronto, Canada, to Vermont every summer to pick him up, making him feel treasured as the youngest child in the family. His grandmother was a retired librarian and a University of Chicago alumna, who shared captivating stories filled with her experiences in Canada. The only mention of Georgia during their trips would come up when dealing with border patrol.
A Surprising Discovery
Two years ago, Thane uncovered a shocking truth: his grandmother was a descendant of Alonzo Church, a prominent Presbyterian pastor and former President of the University of Georgia. But the real surprise was yet to come. Thane learned that his grandmother was of Black heritage and had been "passing" as white throughout her life. This discovery opened a new chapter in Thane's understanding of his ancestry, revealing that he, too, shares these roots. This revelation was not just about origin; it signaled a 70% increase in the complexity of Thane's identity.
